Top 10 Crypto Airdrops: Uniswap Ignites DeFi Frenzy, TIA and BONK Emerge as Dark Horses
The Role of Airdrops in Crypto Market Dynamics
Airdrops, the practice of projects freely distributing tokens to users’ wallets, serve various purposes, such as rewarding active participation and contributing to the community or expanding token circulation. In recent years, timely engagement in prominent projects and meeting set interaction standards could yield significant returns. On December 26, the esteemed crypto price analysis platform CoinGecko spotlighted the top ten airdrops from 2020 to 2023, based on the highest historical token price valuation.
Uniswap: A Benchmark in DeFi’s Evolution
Uniswap’s UNI token tops the list as one of the largest airdrops in history, valued at approximately $6.43 billion. In September 2020, each user who transacted on Uniswap, be it on V1 or V2 protocols, was eligible to claim at least 400 UNI tokens. Although valued at around $1,200 at the time, these tokens would be worth about $16,800 at their historical peak price of $42.

Uniswap’s airdrop was more than a reward; it was instrumental in promoting decentralized governance. The impact was profound across the DeFi sector, making airdrops a common promotional and rewarding mechanism for many crypto projects.
TIA and Bonk: New Entrants Making Waves
Among the newer projects on the top ten list is Celestia, a modular blockchain project. It launched its mainnet in October 2023, integrating modular network and Data Availability Sampling (DAS). The native token TIA was airdropped to about 580,000 users. Despite a modest opening price of $2.9, TIA’s value has surged by 4.7 times to a current $13.83, offering substantial profits for those who held onto their airdropped tokens.

In May 2023, Solana’s first blockchain smartphone Saga was launched. Users who acquired Saga Genesis Token upon activating the phone were eligible to claim up to 30 million Bonk meme tokens via the Bonk App, valued over $700. Interestingly, BONK was not a new meme coin; it debuted in December 2022 with a substantial airdrop to Solana NFT holders.
